No Secrets
The week that was
Dear diary,
Here again? Wasn’t I just here?
I just finished my proposal for the exhibition I mentioned in my last post. My sister Eilish did a final read through and edit which was super helpful, and now it’s done. I crossed four out of five fingers on each hand, crossed my toes, crossed my legs, visualised the exhibition in my mind’s eye and then clicked send which was a physically harder feat than I had expected. I have no idea when I’ll find out if I’ve been successful or not which is probably a good thing. It will be soon because the deadline is pretty tight. Whatever will be will be!
This weekend I have the workshop at the NGV which I’m really looking forward to. I’m also nervous (pretty typical of me) and this sounds boastful but I posted about the workshop on TikTok and the video really took off, so now of course I’m worried that it’s going to get too busy and I won’t have enough materials or space to facilitate everyone to have a really great experience. We have room for 40 participants at any one time, and materials wise I’m a little worried about the variety and amount. I bought a whole bunch of stuff online too but I left it too late and I don’t know if it’s gonna come in time. We’ll see. Another paragraph that I can lazily end with ‘Whatever will be will be!’ But seriously, if you’re coming to the workshop, I think it’s gonna be busy, so keep that in mind! (No doubt I will be humbled now that I’ve said that and no one will come haha)
Seren’s sleep has been much better. A few hiccups still, like when I thought him and I would stay the night at my Mum and Dad’s but I ended up driving him back home at 11.30pm. I’ve never driven a car in my pyjamas before! There is a first for everything. Another first - my Mum and I also took him to a classic car show which was super wholesome. I actually loved it, it was free and it was filled with guys polishing their prized possessions. From what I saw, it was an example of a positive masculine environment which I’m seeking out now that I have Seren.
The tantrums are a bit of a thing at the moment though. Seren’s also not talking yet, which I’m mildly concerned about (but that’s another story… I know he’ll get there as he’s done with all the other milestones!) It makes the tantrums a little harder to navigate as we can’t really communicate with words. Not that it would be sensical communication with a toddler in meltdown mode anyway. Physically it’s challenging to just pick him up and extract him as he’s so big and heavy, and strong! It’s a lot. I still don’t really know what to do but I’ve learnt that remaining calm is the best strategy. I find that hard in a closed environment like a shop as there are other people around and I feel judged or like we’re in the way or inconveniencing people. His latest one was at a park out in the open so it’s easier to just ignore him and let it run its course. When I figure out how to stop a tantrum I’ll let you know and probably make millions off the knowledge too.
Got this Little People rubbish truck and figure for $2 for Seren.
Then I had to post this picture here because I realised I was on a green theme.
I found this Sylvanian Families Koala Family at Savers! I had a coupon (don’t I always) so I got it for $16 which wasn’t too crazy. You literally can’t shop at Savers without the donation coupons though, it’s way too expensive without!
Watching/Listening:
Had a great listen to Carly Simon’s 1972 album No Secrets in the car with Seren the other day. An old, old favourite of mine. My Mum used to play it in the car on tape alongside endless Joni Mitchell. The visual of clouds in my coffee was hugely powerful as an 8 year old. The only skip is Night Owl which ironically is the only song not penned by Simon (it’s by James Taylor) and listening the other day I realised the album was very Taylor Swift coded. The shrouded references to lovers past and present, the weaving story telling, notes of irony. Brilliant and as I was blasting it I was saying to Seren that people will still be listening to this in like, another 100 years. That’s a legacy. That’s an ALBUM. Also, fun fact - Mick Jagger did uncredited backing vocals on You’re So Vain!
Here are my top tracks in order which was really hard and no one asked me to do this obviously but I decided it was necessary.
The Right Thing To Do
You’re So Vain
We Have No Secrets
It Was So Easy
Waited So Long
The Carter Family
Embrace Me You Child
His Friends Are More Than Fond Of Robin
When You Close Your Eyes
Night Owl
Okay otherwise we’re just watching The Pitt and I love it literally so much but after watching it every night for like a month it’s started to feel like I have to clock into the emergency department with them every night and it would be nice to break free a little bit. We’re almost up to date with the latest episode so then we’ll be on a more regular weekly schedule which I think will be more handleable haha.
Wishlist:
Omg I didn’t need to but I accidentally purchased a new dress to wear to my NGV workshop. I saw it and I was just perfect for the vibes and aesthetic of the day. A valid reason even though I can barely afford petrol atm! (Thank you Afterpay) It’s this one by Damson Madder. I got it on The Iconic and I had a code that miraculously worked for $50 off so I told Simon it was practically free..!
Inside a book/magazine from my collection:
This is the second half of last week’s magazine - Women’s Weekly from April 1978.
Best wishes,
Minna
